Minnesota Unemployment Rate Increases by 0.1% for August, to 7%

The national unemployment rate rose by one-tenth of a percent in August to 9.6%. Minnesota’s rate also rose one-tenth in August to a rate of 7.0% (from a revised July rate of 6.9%).
The August report, up 0.1%, has stopped a steady stream of declines or holds over the past several months. July's originally reported rate of 6.8% was revised upward to 6.9%. "The labor market is still very much trying to find its footing", said Kyle Uphoff, Minnesota's Assistant Director of Labor Market Information. "Some areas are doing well. Others are still trying to find their bottom, like construction."
Even though state employers added 600 jobs during the last month, officials speculated overall changes were impacted by the fact more people are looking for work. Unemployment was also affected by the daparture of retail and transportation jobs, along with the reduction in federal census worker positions. Overall, nearly 200,000 Minnesotans remain unemployed.
"While Minnesota's emmployment picture was relatively stable in August, we continue to see a steady pace of growth and outperform the country as a whole," said Dan McElroy, Commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development.
