A FOCUS COMMENT:
“COACHING”
What It Is.
And . . . What It Isn’t.
An
OI Partners–Minnesota Personal
and Leadership Coaching engagement is a very
personal process focused on the needs of
the person being coached. It is based on
the simple assumption that change is needed,
that it is desired by both the organization
and the individual being coached, and… it
is offered with the best interest of the
participant in mind.
It is not a method to guarantee behavior
modification. It is not designed to meet
the predetermined need of the organization
to force fit an individual into a corporate
culture.
Effective
personal and leadership coaching is developmental,
participatory and evolutionary.
It requires the Coach to develop a high level
of organizational and individual trust backed
by a through understanding of the goals,
competencies, and capabilities of the organization,
senior management and – most importantly – the
individual being coached.
Coaching
is most commonly initiated by a concerned
member of management who has observed – in
a recognizably very talented and valuable
employee – the tendency for the person
to exhibit interpersonal, job performance
and / or behavioral issues which are perceived
as potentially limiting to her or his growth
opportunities within the organization. Coaching
is also widely utilized to “fine tune” an
already very talented individual in preparation
for even greater responsibilities.
And… it is becoming increasingly common
for an employee to personally recognize the
benefits of personal coaching as a way to
attain a better understanding of herself
or himself. It is also a way to more effectively
blend one’s personal life and work
life. In these instances, people frequently
seek out or request organization sponsorship
for this type of service. Others engage the
services privately.
