A FOCUS COMMENT:
“When
Just Do It . . . Is Not Enough”
Personal choice … understanding what
really matters to you … recognizing
the options in your life … allocating
your energies to support your value system … creating
life balance. The fallout from a workplace
in constant flux means individuals are recognizing
the importance of “getting a life.” The
result for organizations can be employees
who are empowered in their own lives and
committed to success in their professional
lives.
One
of the biggest challenges we face in executive
coaching or career transition is
that people can’t identify accomplishments
in their careers. They don’t know their
story. When we ask them about their jobs,
they start listing the where’s and
when’s, but they have no perspective
on the why’s or how’s, or the
impact they had on the company.
In
today’s competitive marketplace,
companies can’t afford to have an employee
who is “just doing
my job.”
Job satisfaction that emphasizes only compensation,
work hours, and job descriptions is an anachronism.
Companies need to have people who are committed
to the success of the organization and the
best way to ensure that commitment is to
help them relate it to their own personal/professional
goals.
We are currently using and offering an assessment
instrument we believe can be a major factor
for companies and individuals working together
to meet the demanding goals of a post 9/11
society.
The
Employee Relationship Report® is
a survey that gives an organization’s
leaders important feedback on how committed
employees are to the company. As one company
president said, “My staff thinks I
don’t have time to mess with this.
I don’t have time not to.”
The
world of work is changing. The old world
was simple. There were rules, which most
of us knew and most of us followed, most
of the time. The new world is complex. People
entering the workforce today will be likely
to change careers several times. Instead
of climbing the corporate ladder, they’ll
own and manage their own careers. In the
old corporate world, people were cogs in
the industrial wheel; in the new world of
work, they are valued as intellectual resources,
and recognized as partners.
